When I stand on a beautiful beach like the one in this painting, I love to gaze across the water and see if I can spot a sailboat gracefully skimming along the horizon. Here, a rich blue sky stretches above a light blue ocean, with colorful clouds adding energy and movement overhead. In the foreground, beachgoers dot the shoreline, enjoying the simple pleasure of a day by the sea.
Looking at this painting today reminds me of a quote from the dearly departed Dolly Parton: “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” Sometimes asking the right questions starts with looking at the world from an entirely different perspective. We may not be able to control external events, but we can choose how we respond, adapt and chart our own course.
