This painting of hay has had quite a journey. Last year, during hay season, I saw the beautiful round bales stacked beside each other in a geometric pattern. To start the painting, I drew the bales and horizon line on a canvas. And, as Van Gogh taught us, hay is not merely the color of dried beige but actually hundreds of colors coming together like a kaleidoscope. To make the hay bales interesting while not wasting valuable paint, after every painting session this past year, I used whatever paint was left on my palette, applying deliberate strokes to the hay bales on the canvas.
Eventually, the painting came to life—capturing the blue sky filled with billowy clouds and the cut green grass on the ground. It was hard to know when this one was complete, but this week I deemed it a finished painting.
This painting, “Bumper Crop,” has my heart, soul and time in it. It will be framed in a large gold frame and is quite stunning.
